WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, and standing in need of God’s grace,

let us confess that need in community with one another.

A brief silence is held for reflection.

God our redeemer,

We admit that human power is not enough to heal us,

human will is not enough to sustain us,

and human love is not enough to repair us.

Where we are fearful and searching,

when we long for something more to soothe the ache of brokenness,

your grace is our source of peace and wholeness.

Help us to trust you with our mistakes and our need.

Teach us to reconcile who we have been with who you call us to be.

Love us out of sin and into new life.

People of God, hear this good news—

that when we believed all hope was lost, Jesus defied the grave.

We are already and always made new.

Let us worship together in gratitude, and in freedom.

Amen.

Prayer of the Day The Fifth Step Prayer

Let us pray.  Holy One, our moral inventories have shown us who we are; yet we ask for Your help in admitting our wrongs to another person and to You. Assure us, and be with us in this step; for without this step we cannot progress in recovery. With Your help, we can do this, and we do it. Amen.

WORD

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song

FIRST READING Psalm 32

A reading from Psalms.

1 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
2 Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3 While I kept silent, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

6 Therefore let all who are faithful
offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters
shall not reach them.
7 You are a hiding place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.

8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
else it will not stay near you.

10 Many are the torments of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Pastor Cassie

SECOND READING Romans 7:15-20

A reading from Romans.

15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But in fact it is no longer I who do it but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that the good does not dwell within me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do the good lies close at hand, but not the ability. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it but sin that dwells within me.

Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL John 8:2-11

The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

2 Early in the morning Jesus came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and, making her stand before all of them, 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, sir.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Drawn into the embrace of the holy Trinity, we lift our prayers for the wholeness of the church, the world, and all creation.

A brief silence.

Saving God, awaken your church to your truth as it follows your path of love. Encourage pastors, deacons, teachers, and seminarians, and lead them as they seek to learn your ways.
God of grace, hear our prayer.

Prosper the harvests of fruit-bearing bushes, trees, and plants. Uphold farmers and farm workers as they labor through summer days, and bring relief to lands that are parched with heat.
God of grace, hear our prayer.

Instill in leaders of the world a strong love for their neighbors. Compel them to govern with equity and to give aid and protection to people who are vulnerable, especially strangers, migrants, and asylum seekers. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Draw near to people in need of help, comfort, and healing especially Nancy, Bert, Verle, Darlene, Shirley, Michael, Bill, Jim, Gretchen, Julia, Joanne, Maddie, Lloyd & Sue, Butch, Jennifer, all those affected by addiction, all those affected by mental illness, and all military personnel and first responders. Provide protection and aid to children who are unsafe and undernourished while on summer break. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Bless the ministries of our congregation. Give us open hearts that we may weep with those who are weeping, and rejoice with those who are rejoicing. We especially celebrate Quinn Sutherland’s fourteenth birthday through altar flowers given by his parents. Help us live out our call as followers of Christ and people of Good Shepherd within the world. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

We give you thanks for all who have gone before us and have made your love known. Help us to follow their witness as we await our share in the inheritance of the saints.
God of grace, hear our prayer.

Gather all our prayers in your mercy, O God. Grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change; courage to change the things we can; and wisdom to know the difference; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

DIALOGUE

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

You are indeed holy, redeeming God,

and it is in your name that we journey to gather at your table.

Like Adam, tempted in the Garden of Eden,

We admit our mistakes, and believe you can help us.

Like Jonah, desperate to avoid his calling in Ninevah,

We yield to your loving will, and search our wandering hearts.

Like David, struggling between selfish desires and the wisdom of a king,

We confess that we cannot do this alone, and release the belief that we should.

And we tell the story of your son, Jesus,

who renewed the lives of lowly fisherman, and remembered the dignity of the poor.

He mended those who were wounded, and attended to those who had been overlooked.

He prayed for your will to be done, and on the cross, shared a love that conquers death.

And on the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.

As we follow in his steps and take our place at the table he prepares,
we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again!

Send your Holy Spirit on this bread and cup.

Make them signs of your abundant grace in a broken world.

Use them to sustain your people in joy, as we seek your justice and truth.

Amen. Come, Holy Spirit!

LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray as Jesus taught us, each in the words or language of our choice.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth
as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those
who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours,

now and forever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
We come to this table not because we are perfect, but because here God promises to love us and make us new. Here God invites the lost and the broken and the outcast to claim a seat at the table. Come, taste and see God’s welcome for us all.

COMMUNION

At this table, Christ is both host and meal, and offers himself to all who hunger and thirst for his presence.

We believe that he is truly present in this sacrament.

Come to the front, where bread is placed in your hand (you can request a gluten-free wafer), and where you receive wine by taking a cup from the tray (the cups in the center contain white grape juice).

If you do not wish to commune, you are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing.

If you need to receive communion in your seat, simply notify an usher.

No one is too young to receive this sacrament, though some families wish to give their children some instruction before they take their first communion. If a young child accompanies you, please indicate to the pastor whether they should receive bread or a blessing.
