Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then he said, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:35-40
CROP Walk: This is a community-wide event sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations to raise funds in the fight against hunger both locally and world-wide. It is a five mile walk through scenic Westborough held in October of each year. GSLC members help with walker registration and by participating in the walk. It is a wonderful event for all ages. It is especially popular with our confirmation class.
ELCA Good Gifts: Several times a year, GSLC will hold a “good gifts” sale. “Good gifts” may be chicks during the Lenten season or farm animals at Christmastime. These gifts are given internationally through the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America to help alleviate hunger and poverty worldwide. Volunteers help in identifying and organizing the sale days.
Lutheran World Relief Quilts: Through Lutheran World Relief, the GSLC Quilters make and distribute quilts world-wide to individuals and families in need. We have many very talented quilters at GSLC who are excellent teachers. So, whether you are an experienced quilter or new to quilting, this is a wonderful service project where you get to meet new people and work individually or in a group setting. The quilts are made on an on-going basis using primarily donated fabric. There are several “quilting days” each year, where quilters can come together and sew, chat, and help a person in need.
Florence House: Throughout the year, GSLC collects items such as toiletries, baby food and infant supplies and donates them to Florence House, a residential program for young mothers and their children. At times, GSLC also provides requested birthday gifts and has helped with maintenance issues at the house. The house is located in Worcester.
Christmas Giving Tree: This is a very special event at GSLC. Each year the Christmas Giving Tree arrives in the Lobby filled with tags requesting an item for someone who otherwise would not receive a gift at Christmas. Agencies that are often supported include: Lutheran Social Services, AIDS Project Worcester, Ashland Street Residence, Florence House, and the Kennedy School for Boys. Volunteers help with the purchase, sorting, and delivery of the gifts.
Food Packaging Event: In conjunction with the 30 Hour Famine held by Teens at Good shepherd (TAGS) each year, the congregation sponsors a food packaging event in February. The event is done with Outreach™, a non-profit based in Union, Iowa and End Hunger New England located in Marshfield, Massachusetts. This is a tremendous volunteer opportunity for families!! Almost 300 volunteers from our congregation and the interfaith community of Westborough and surrounding towns take part in the event. Volunteers are shown how to package a meal and can help for an hour or all day. In 2016, $14,100 was raised for this event and because each meal costs only 25 cents to package, we were able to package 56,400 meals for people in need!!! All the meals stay within Worcester County to help our neighbors in need.
Kids’ Express/Teen LOGOS: Four Fridays a year, GSLC volunteers cook and serve an evening meal for the children participating in Kids Express/Teen LOGOS at Worcester’s Concordia Lutheran Church. The program runs during the school year and provides the children an evening of activities and a warm meal. This is a wonderful service opportunity for families and youth accompanied by an adult.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
