3rd Saturday of Lent
How and why are you helping Good Shepherd pass along the faith to others?
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 6 Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.7 Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.
My father’s family was from the coal regions of Pennsylvania. My Grandmother Hopkins died when I was just five years old but she left me with lots of memories. I especially remember walking down the hill with her carrying a jug of ice water to be delivered to the men working hard across from her school. When we got to the big hole, she squeezed my hand and said, “Suzie, I want you to remember this. Your family is building a church.”
Her oldest son, my Godfather Uncle Sonny, also left me with many memories. Whenever we went to visit him in what used to be my grandmother’s house, he would take out his favorite game – a box of Bible questions. He would quiz me endlessly to check whether I was learning anything in Sunday School. He was the Sunday School Superintendent at the church our family built and frequently preached when the traveling pastor couldn’t get there on a given Sunday.
My parents made sure my brother and I got to Sunday School every Sunday and went to church afterward; and my mother’s two sisters would take me to Wednesday night Lenten services every year (where I first heard a trumpet in church). I was enrolled in Vacation Bible School every summer and attended church camp from second grade through sophomore year in high school.
That’s how the faith was passed on to me, and that’s how I passed the faith on to my daughter.
I arrived at Good Shepherd in 1988. At the end of that first year, Pastor Bean asked me to teach Midweek School to fifth and sixth graders. It’s now 29 years later and you can still find me in the Downstairs Fellowship Hall on Wednesday nights. I hope I’m helping to pass on the faith. There have been some positive indicators. 3 of my favorites are:
- When I delivered my tax forms to Daniel 3 years ago, he began reciting the books of the Old Testament and asked if that earned him ‘a choice’.
- Stephanie told me when she took Allie and a friend to see Jesus Christ Superstar at the Centrum, Allie was explaining everything to her friend.
- At our Annual Talent Show, we’ve added an Alumni Team to compete with the current Midweekers and Confirmation students in Are You Smarter than a Midweek Student – and they’re still going strong.
I also teach Sunday School, plan Vacation Bible School and manage the Calumet Campership Fund. I have been blessed with a faith that has been passed on to me, and I hope I have been a blessing to others in that same way.
Dear Lord, we are so thankful for those you have put in our lives that have passed on the faith to us. We pray that every child is blessed with individuals who accept the awesome responsibility of passing on the faith. Amen.
