5th Wednesday in Lent

Day 25

We should be encouraged and drawn to pray [the Lord’s Prayer] because…God takes the initiative and puts into our mouths the very words and approach we are to use.  In this way we see how deeply concerned he is about our needs, and we should never doubt that such prayer pleases him and will assuredly be heard.  So this prayer is far superior to all others that we might devise ourselves.  For in that case our conscience would always be in doubt, saying, “I have prayed, but who knows whether it pleases him or whether I have hit upon the right form and mode?”  Thus there is no nobler prayer to be found on earth, for it has the powerful testimony that God loves to hear it.

And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night?  Will he delay long in helping them?  I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them.  Luke 18:7-8.

One of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Jesus taught them, saying “When you pray, say…”  From Jesus himself, we have the prayer known as the Lord’s Prayer.  It is the most spoken prayer in the world!

Learning this prayer as a young child, the first thing I understood was that God was in heaven.  As I grew, I learned that His name was holy, that He wanted me to do His will, and that I could ask Him for food, forgiveness, and protection.  By the time I completed confirmation, I had come to the realization that Jesus had given us the formula on how He wanted us to live. I came to understand that to live the Lord’s Prayer is to live the will of God.  How simple yet how profound!

If all people would live by the words of this prayer, imagine what could be?  But sometimes it’s spoken by rote, without thought.  Take time now and say the Lord’s Prayer. Listen to the words with your heart and feel them with your soul.  And may you find His comfort and peace among them. For it truly is a powerful prayer.

Lord, we know that when we pray, You hear our every word and You know what is in our hearts.  Help us to be able to live as You would have us live. Give us the strength to do Your will.  We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
